After such a wintry March and early April it's a relief to know that mosquito season is already here.
Workers from the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District have been dropping thimble-sized briquets of an antimosquito chemical on lakes and wetlands around the metro area for several weeks. The enemy: Coquillettidia perturbans, a species whose larvae, instead of dying in the autumn frost, hitch a ride through winter on the floating roots of cattails and emerge as human-biting mosquitoes just in time for July 4th.
