No way would I have a froufrou dog in mylife," dedared Susi Gleffe, of Central California. Gleffe, who bred Shetland sheepdogs for 20 years, nevertheless agreed to accompany a friend acquiring a papillon, a silky-coated toy spaniel breed with oversized, fringed "butterfly" ears. "Then I saw this little spitfire of a dog," says Gleffe, "and everything changed." Ten years later, Gleffe is president of the 800-memberstrong Papillon Club of America, an association devoted to this petite breed, recognized by the AKC in 1935.
Big-dog people tend to put their noses in the air when considering the toy breeds-believing them to be yappy, snappy, and simply not "real" ...
