Ecological risk assessment program at the Savannah River Site (SRS) is a comprehensive process that follows the 1997 EPA Ecological Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund. A site characterization is first performed on a waste unit, which yields the detected constituents and their analytical results within the waste unit media (soil; and if present, surface water and sediment). These constituents are then compared to ecological screening values (ESVs), which are accepted benchmarks for individual concentrations.
