Tiger-Lilies & Horse-Chestnuts
Had I been alive when flowers
could interchange with hands
I'd have attached a tiger-lily
to one wrist, branch
of a horse-chestnut tree to the other.
My six tapered lily-fingers
would enclose whatever I wished:
a plum, an apricot, a stone marked
with veinwork that matched their petals.
That flower-hand could also spread open,
the hand of a child performing
a Balinese finger-dance, while my
horse-chestnut hand's fan-shaped leaves
would cool me and intercept the dust.
But if so ...
