Three weeks after receiving federal approval to build a 280-mile line into the Powder River Basin coal fields, the 1,100-mile Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern unveiled another strategic expansion. DM&E President Kevin V. Schieffer on Feb. 21 announced a definitive agreement to acquire all of the lines, rolling stock, and other assets of the 1,700-mile I&M Rail Link (IMRL), creating a system with direct access to the major gateways of Chicago, the Twin Cities, and Kansas City.
