Victor Raul Street, a dirt road in a shantytown on the edge of Lima, Peru, is home to one of the city's many communal kitchens. The kitchen, on the second floor of a humble brick building, is made up of two small rooms equipped with a table, stove and a few basic cooking facilities.

Each morning, three or four low-income women meet at the kitchen to prepare a communal meal. The tasks, rotated among the members of the kitchen, include purchasing, planning, preparation, and distribution of the food.
