BEIJING, April 11 Asia Pulse - China has outstripped the United States and Japan to become the world's No.1 stainless steel consumer, said Li Cheng, president of the China Stainless Steel Council.

According to Prof. Li, China's apparent consumption of stainless steel in 2001 was about 2.25 million tons, while the apparent consumption of the US and Japan was 2 million tons and 1.5 to 1.6 million tons.

China's consumption of stainless steel has been growing at an average annual rate of 17 per cent for the past 10 years, while the world's average growth was 4-7 per cent.
