Apr. 12--California's biggest timber company has sold part of a scenic American River canyon to the U.S. Forest Service for $1.7 million -- a deal that is drawing raves from some environmental groups and reservations from others.
Late last month, Sierra Pacific Industries sold 3,405 acres to the Tahoe National Forest in a transfer arranged by a nonprofit conservancy. The deal means the public can soon hike into steep canyon areas and waterfalls along the north fork of the American River that have been privately owned for more than a century.
