The Australian stage premiere of Parsifal did not occur until September 22, 2001, a whopping 119 years after the world premiere in Bayreuth in 1882. Nevertheless, it was an important antipodean milestone and artistic achievement.
Under Jeffrey Tate's magical baton, the same one that was largely responsible three years ago for the success of the first Ring cycles staged in Australia since 1913, the State Opera of South Australia's 2001 Parsifal had a near-ideal cast, led by the towering presence of Danish heldentenor Poul Elming in the title role.
