Both the existence and the importance of spatial variation in soil properties and crop production are axiomatic; nevertheless, current understanding of the causes and sources of variation is incomplete. This understanding is essential for development of cost-effective and environmentally-sustainable farming practices. It has been recognized that variation is the product of the interaction of natural properties and processes (intrinsic variability) with human practices (management-induced variability) and developments in precision farming have sought to overcome the former through spatial variation in the latter.
