IT IS the classic drinks party disaster - an inadvertent nudge and a glass of red wine is spilled over the cream coloured carpet.
Instinctively the host rushes to apply a traditional remedy: throwing a glass of white wine on the stain and then rubbing salt into it.
But now researchers claim such a method is probably a waste of time.
They say that, in some cases, salt and white wine may even make things worse.
Instead, they recommend a combination of liquid soap and hydrogen peroxide - the substance used to bleach hair.
