Alone in the Alaskan wilderness, hundreds of miles from civilisation, I should have had just one thought in my mind: my goal, the peak of Mount Hess, which lay several days ahead above the clouds. But as I navigated the frozen woods, streams and ravines that led to the foothills, a chilling sight stopped me short - bear tracks.
