CHEMICAL COMPANIES are becoming involved for the first time in emissions trading in Europe. But, the arrival of this method of reducing discharges of greenhouse gases is being greeted with a cool response by sections of the European chemical industry.
They claim it will raise investment costs and could ultimately drive energy-intensive production capacity out of Europe.
Last month, the UK government launched the first official emissions trading project in the region, including the chemicals and other industries.
