One of the first big arguments that Pete Seeger and I had when we were working to revive Sing Out! back in 1983 had to do with our long-running subtitle: "The Folk Song Magazine." I hope Pete won't mind too much if I paraphrase his position. He was concerned on two fronts: First, he was bothered by the "The" which he felt discounted the other fine magazines which also champion some of the very same music and artists at the core of our mission. Secondly, he expressed concern that our potential audience would actually be put off by the term "folk song," thinking we were solely a magazine devoted to the kind of white-male-singer-songwriter-acoustic-pop-songs that are ...
