THE AMERICAN HERITAGE dictionary defines patriotism as love, support or defense for one's country. Standing for the national anthem, enlisting in military service and displaying the flag are common expressions of patriotism.
April 15, or tax day, presents another way to love one's country and defend its ideals of freedom, equality and justice. That is, to join the growing number of Americans who refuse to pay taxes that fund war and its preparations and instead redirect those taxes to organizations that meet human needs and maintain environmental sustainability.
