Bernard Cardinal Law spent the last few days at the Vatican briefing top officials including Pope John Paul II about plummeting public opinion in his embattled archdiocese and calls for his resignation, he said yesterday.
"The pope and others with whom I met are very conscious of the gravity of the situation,'' Law wrote in the statement released last night. In a reassertion that he does not plan to step down, Law wrote: "I return home encouraged in my efforts to provide the strongest possible leadership in ensuring, as far as humanly possible, that no child is ever abused again by a priest of this archdiocese.''
