Ansel Adams did more to preserve the awesome beauty of the American West than any artist.
"Ansel Adams: A Documentary Film," written and directed by Ric Burns ("The Civil War" and the 10-hour "New York"), poignantly and affectionately details the photographer and environmentalist's remarkable achievements. It premieres as part of PBS' "American Experience" series Sunday night at 9 on WGBH (Ch. 2), on the eve of Earth Day.
Born in San Francisco in 1902, Adams grew up surrounded by the expansive natural beauty of the West. In 1916, he ventured into Yosemite Valley for the first time. It was a prophetic, transformative journey.
