Personalized cancer vaccines may sound like the stuff of science fiction novels, but Merix Bioscience Inc. of Durham has the technology and most of the financial backing to turn a seemingly futuristic idea into real therapies.
Quietly formed in 1997 to develop and commercialize novel vaccine technology from Duke University in Durham, Merix made a big splash last year when it raised $39.5 million from various U.S. and international investors, including Durham-based Aurora Funds and Intersouth Partners.
