Mexican director-writer Guillermo Del Toro is one of the most multifaceted cinematic figures to come out of his native country in the past decade. Since Del Toro won the critics' prize at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival and nine Mexican Academy awards for his debut feature, the elegant yet visceral zombie-horror flick Gronos, the thirty-seven-year-old filmmaker has been named by Time magazine as one of the up-and-coming young leaders in Latin American cinema for the new millennium.
