The long-term interests of American farmers and the credibility of the U.S. in World Trade Organization talks are at risk if current proposals before a joint congressional conference committee for a new farm bill get the go-ahead, Canadian Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief told a conference April 10 in Washington, D.C.
The 144 countries in WTO agreed last November in Doha, Qatar, to negotiate new rules governing agricultural trade by the end of 2004. Those negotiations are supposed to move toward the elimination of export subsidies, sharp cuts in domestic support and significantly improved access for imported agricultural products to domestic markets.
