BEFORE INTERNAL auditing took root in Belgium, the country's banking industry had a long history of employing inspectors to examine financial records. The activities of these individuals, as well as management's need for stronger internal controls, sparked the development of audit functions within Belgian organizations. Multinational companies, particularly those based out of the United States, later helped introduce new practices to the country's auditors, and the profession then grew in size and scope with the help of these outside influences.
