Earlier this year, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer invited Vice President Dick Cheney to visit New York's Adirondack wilderness and witness for himself the devastating effects of acid rain. Cheney declined, but the administration is sending another representative.
Assuming Saturday's earthquake hasn't caused a last-minute change of plans, President Bush will visit the Adirondacks today. It is a fitting place for him to be on Earth Day. The Adirondacks have been called "the canary in the coal mine" as the impact of acid rain is studied. The damage it causes is most evident there, but it is spreading around the country.
