Maine has the largest Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry in the country. Output in 2000 reached 36 million pounds; 8 million more pounds than the state's groundfish landings. But the aquaculture boom may be winding down.
"We need to stop and think about how we're going about this," says Marsden Brewer, a Stonington, Maine, lobsterman. "With fisheries management all we hear about is effort reductions, with aquaculture it's all about expansion," he says.
