In making its sixth acquisition in 13 months, Journal Register Co. has extended its footprint in the greater Philadelphia area, strengthening its position with advertisers there and broadening the reach of a combined newsgathering operation that already stretches from the Jersey shore to Pennsylvania's Amish country.
The eight free-distribution weeklies of News Gleaner Publications of Philadelphia, plus its seven monthly Life titles "actually filled in a pocket" in the northeast part of the Philly market, says Robert Jelenic, chairman, president and chief executive of the company based in Trenton, N.J.
