"I think the movement is beginning to wake up," Valerie Mullen, an 80-year-old anti-war activist from Vermont, exclaimed Saturday as she surveyed the swelling crowd of people in Washington to protest against the economic, international and military policies of the Bush administration.
While activists always declare victory when a decent crowd shows up to demonstrate, Mullen was not alone in expressing awe at the size of the crowds that gathered in Washington for last weekend's protests against corporate globalization, a seemingly endless "war against terrorism" and U.S. military aid to Israel.
