Since the early 1990s, the Codex Alimentarius Commission has sought restrictions on access to and information about vitamin supplements. In testimony before the House Government Reform Committee on Access to Dietary Supplements, dated March 21, 2001, Representative Pete DeFazio explained that the Codex Commission is part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization Food Standard Program.
