One of the first federal grants for distribution of human embryonic stem cells will go to the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson announced Friday.

The money will help WARF share its five lines of stem cells with scientists worldwide, Thompson said.

Speaking at a bioethics conference in Fitchburg, the former governor said $800,000 of a total $3.5 million will go to WARF, which holds patents on research discoveries of UW-Madison. The stem cell money will go to WiCell, its subsidiary.
