Tunisia still has to import up to half of its requirements of petroleum products. The country has one refinery, with a capacity of 35,000 b/d, and this sector has not seen changes for decades.
Plans to double the capacity of Bizerte's refinery, proposed in the early 1980s, have been dropped as the project was too expensive for the government. The Ministry of Industry, in charge of the energy sector and the country's hydrocarbon resources, has decided to let the private sector expand this business.
