General Mediterranean Holding (GMH) of Luxembourg has been in negotiation with the Tunisian Ministry of Industry to have a new $150m oil refinery built at La Skhirra, Tunisia's main crude oil terminal, on the Gulf of GabSs, about 280 kilometres south of Tunis. This private venture, involving Tunisian investors, will initially have a throughput capacity of 2 million tons/year (about 40,000 b/d).
In April 2000 GMH's chairman Nadhmi Auchi was quoted as saying that the refinery's final capacity will be 8 million t/y (about 160,000 b/d). As the country's oil consumption is not likely to rise as rapidly as the pace of its demand for natural gas, the refinery's output ...
