Superficial bladder cancer is usually treated with transurethral resection of the tumor. It may be followed by Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) intravesical installations, for frequent recurrence, superficial invasion, or multifocality. BCG is also used in Third World countries as a vaccination against tuberculosis (TB). It often causes a patient to develop a positive response to a purified protein derivative (PPD) skin test, although the degree and duration of response is quite variable.
