Apr. 29--United States residents commonly confuse Mexico's Cinco de Mayo (the Fifth of May) holiday with Mexican independence day.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates a 19th-century battle in which a heavily outnumbered Mexican army defeated the French army.

Mexican independence day is in September, but Cinco de Mayo gets more attention because, well, maybe people feel like having a party in the spring.

Folks on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border delight in gathering to celebrate Mexican culture via its food, music, art and cultural traditions.
