FEBRUARY 2nd was the vietnamese communist party's 60th birthday. The party general secretary, Mr Nguyen Van Linh, gave an hour-long speech to mark the occasion, during which some observers thought they saw him cry. He has a lot to cry about. The party whose force of arms defeated France, America and China has turned its homeland into one of the poorest countries on earth. Its aged leaders already felt humiliated by this. Then came the bewildering catastrophes in Eastern Europe and Russia, upon whose support Vietnam has long depended.
