What's in a nose?
PARIS
EVEN before the opening night on February 6th, Parisians, had decided Jean-Paul Belmondo's stage "Cyrano" would be a hit; the $8m production at the Marigny Theatre is sold out until April. But Mr Belmondo, bouncing off a stage success two seasons ago with "Kean", a Dumas play rewritten by Sartre, knows that shadows of past Cyranos loom large. Constant Coquelin's recording of excerpts at the end of the last century is still unequalled for panache; Jose Ferrer's film version still pops up on late-night television; and Steve Martin's modern-dress-but-same-old-nose "Roxanne" is still a favourite in the video shops.
