LANDOWNERS 
 
   What does it mean to own a half-hectare? 
   I stood on the bank of the stream 
 
   and asked the stones and the pools: 
   how deep do my boundaries extend, 
 
   through how many seams of mantle? 
   How high? Up to where the indigo sky 
 
   is feathered with black? 
   For a full hour the cork oaks were silent 
 
   while I questioned each leaf.
