Those of us regularly associated with the manufacture and use of paper have become accustomed to the U.S. system for describing the weight of paper and may see little reason to change the system. To newcomers and those less familiar with paper, this system must appear confusing and unnecessarily involved. Most measurement systems use a single reference standard to define a property, including weight. Unfortunately, the U.S. system as it has evolved does not relate paper weight measurement to a single reference area.
