1921: Madison attorney Michael Olbrich (1881-1929) - using $40,000 of his own money and proceeds of two fund-raising drives - purchases 3,500 feet of Lake Monona shoreline. The city of Madison takes title of the land, which is destined to become Olbrich Park.
1933: Madison Garden Club volunteers plant the first flowers in Olbrich Park.
1952: The Madison Park Commission allocates $22,000 to begin construction of the Olbrich Park Gardens. The Sunken Garden shelters are the first structures built.
1955: Stan Hill becomes Olbrich's first horticulturist.
