May 2--WASHINGTON--The United States and Saudi Arabia are working more closely than ever to try to bring peace to the Middle East, but whether they are ready, willing or able to intervene forcefully enough to make a difference remains an open question.
The strategy, as described by senior U.S. officials and diplomats, is for President Bush to nudge Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon toward peace talks with the Palestinians and away from the use of force, while the Saudis do much the same with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
