Task force set-up by Indian government has made first recommendations on introduction of set-top boxes by cable operators. Proposals to encrypt cable channels have been hotly debated--prompted by rising cable channel prices, which channel groups say have been forced by under-reporting of subscriber numbers. According to figures released by Indian government, there are 38m cable and satellite households in India, paying an average of Rs125 (Euro 2.90) a month. Subscription revenue generates Rs5,700 crores (Euro 1.3bn) a year.
If implemented, task force's recommendations will be a major shakeup for cable industry, which has developed in a largely unregulated way. ...
