In 1847, the Italian Ascanio Sobrero synthesised nitroglycerine for the first time, by mixing glycerine with concentrated sulphuric and nitric acids. This newly discovered explosive was found to be highly capricious: it could be difficult to detonate and could explode unexpectedly. However, the discovery of this oily, sweet tasting substance, heralded the era of high explosives.
