December in Europe. Roses are in full blowsy bloom, huge poinsettias flower their blood-red hearts out, and the whitewashed houses huddled in the valleys are smothered in an explosion of pink and purple bougainvillea. Bananas are cropping in the plantations, feathery palm trees sway in a gentle breeze, and vacationers are bronzing on the beach. Out in the fields, farmers gather basketfuls of the nutty flavored little potatoes that taste so delicious when smothered in sea salt and baked until the skins turn a crinkly brown.
