The government has abolished the 5% import duty on wheat grains. The finance ministry said the abolition of the import duty was effective as from March 14 to ensure supply on the domestic market.

In short term the decision of the finance minister is not expected to cause a surge in imports of the foodstuff as the type of wheat grain exempted from import duty is one in the tariff category of HS 1104 which is husked wheat grain, Imports are dominated by unhusked grains. Therefore, the new regulation would hardly cause change in import volume.
