WASHINGTON, May 06, 2002

President George W. Bush welcomed Myanmar's decision Monday to release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, but the State Department said it was not enough to make the United States reconsider lifting sanctions against the country.

Suu Kyi was released earlier Monday after spending almost 15 years under house arrest.

Talking to reporters at an elementary school in Michigan, Bush said her release was "very positive, it's a good development."
