ABIX via COMTEX) -- Over the past 30 years, the average household size in Australia has shrunk to 2.6 people in March 2002. The Australian Bureau of Statistics projected a further fall to 2.2 or 2.3 people per household by 2021. In 1986, households comprising four or more people made up 31.5 per cent of households. This has been reduced to 25.4 per cent in 2002, while one or two-person households have risen to 58 per cent of households. While manufacturers, such as in laundry detergents, are shifting towards larger pack sizes, this rarely leads to increased consumption.
