WITHIN the next few weeks, the British and Spanish governments are expected to reach an agreement over the future of Gibraltar. They will propose joint Anglo-Spanish control over the colony and its 30,000 inhabitants.

However, Spain will not drop its claim to total sovereignty.

The agreement will be put to the Gibraltarians in the form of a referendum later this year. It is 100 per cent certain to be rejected. In 1967, the people of Gibraltar voted by 12,138 to 44 to remain British, and the same sort of overwhelming majority is expected again.
