The sound of shouting and screams drew Evaughn Thornton from her Elgin house Saturday evening, and what she saw outside broke her heart.

A pit bull was in the backyard brutally mauling her year-old dog Patches, a miniature collie and rat terrier mix that was leashed behind her house.

Screaming neighbors repeatedly kicked the pit bull trying to stop the attack, and one person even beat it with a 2-by-4 board, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The pit bull refused to let go of Thornton's 10-pound puppy until it was dead.
