While at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, Teresa Cherry took a job as a typist at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. After experiencing the beauty of the refuge close up, she decided to seek a career as a recreation planner. She went on to earn a degree in the field from Virginia Wesleyan College, and began working full time.
"I worked at Back Bay for about 10 years, leading group tours, working with volunteer program and building and maintaining trails" she said. "I worked up to becoming a recreation assistant before being promoted and coming to the Dismal Swamp."
