LOUIS XIV'S PARENTS HAD TRIED FOR MANY YEARS TO HAVE A BABY. THEN, IN 1637, IN desperation, they asked the public to pray to the Virgin Mary for an heir to the throne. The following year, a son was born and given the nickname "Louis the God-Given." This anecdote shows that the 17th century was a profoundly religious age.
