At first it looked like just another crank letter. There is no shortage of those in any newsroom.

Then the FBI put out an all-points bulletin for Luke John Helder for allegedly carrying out a string of mailbox bombings that stretched from western Illinois to central Colorado, and Alexander Conant made the connection.

"I thought this was just one more crazy letter from another crazy person," said the Badger Herald editor. "I gave it a second look only because there were a lot of references to the current bombings."
