This issue of FILM COMMENT features two articles devoted to the history and influence of the legendary French film magazine Cahiers du Cinema, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Long ago, Cahiers had an indirect yet powerful impact on American film culture. The journal captured the imagination of an American cinephile named Andrew Sarris, who began applying its ideas and values to his own writing on film. Sarris effectively made over Cahiers' celebrated "politique des auteurs" into what became known as the "auteur theory," an idea that spread like wildfire over the next ten years and eventually became the key organizing principle of American film criticism.
