Area businesses may soon face stricter rules covering how much pollution can be released into the bay or ocean -- whether or not they are near the water.
At issue is California's new 303(d) list, named for the section of the federal Clean Water Act covering "impaired" waterways. The statewide list will update a previous version from 1998, said Jimmy Smith, an environmental scientist for the Regional Water Quality Control Board.
The regional board submitted a preliminary version of local waterways to the state Water Resources Board last October. The list describes about 80 polluted areas in San Diego, about half of which are from the 1998 list, he said.
